Captain a 100' school ship for 7 weeks at a time. 12 students aboard, and you set the standard.

SailFuture's school ship sails the Caribbean with at-risk youth aboard. This is a rotational Captain position. You take 1 to 3 expeditions a year, run the vessel, and mentor the students while you do it.

• Pay

  • $7,500 per month

• Bonus

  • $5,000 per term, based on Impact Outcomes

• Rotation

  • 1 to 3 expeditions a year, 9 weeks each

• Each expedition

  • 1 week prep, 7 weeks with students, 1 week wrap-up and handoff

• Where

  • Primarily Trinidad to St. Maarten

• Travel and health

  • Flights to and from the vessel (up to $750 round trip) and GeoBlue health insurance while aboard

  • 100' Giorgetti & Magrini ketch with room for 12 students and 6 staff. Staff stay in shared cabins with a shared bathroom, separate from students

What you'll do

Command the vessel

• Manage and maintain the whole vessel

• Run daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance on all systems

• Diagnose and repair systems as needed

• Make sure program Standard Operating Procedures are followed at all times

Set the standard

• Hold all youth and rotating program staff to the highest level of seamanship

Mentor

• Build a real bond with each young person through 1:1 and group time

• Build teamwork among students and staff on board

• Join service learning projects and all youth programming through the expedition

What you bring

• USCG 100-Ton Master, RYA Yachtmaster Offshore, or IYT Yachtmaster Offshore

• 5+ years as Captain or Master of a sailing vessel over 65' LOA

• Strong knowledge of all yacht systems

• First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguard certifications

• Valid driver's license

• Empathy to relate to the life experiences of the youth SailFuture serves
