Sutter Health Academic Affairs is seeking a part-time Physician / Scientific Lead for Student Research, Scholarship, and Pathways. This leadership role will oversee and expand research, scholarship, mentorship, and workforce development programs that support learners across the educational continuum and strengthen Sutter Health's academic mission.
The Physician / Scientific Lead for Student Research, Scholarship, and Pathways provides operational leadership for a focused portfolio of research and pathway programs across the learner continuum.
The initial portfolio includes:
- Oversight over the CDU medical student scholarship program
- Continued development and oversight of the medical student summer research program, inclusive of Charles R. Drew University (CDU) students and designed for future expansion to additional medical school partners

A central responsibility of this role is to help assess feasibility, define the program models, build the necessary partnerships and infrastructure, and develop implementation plans for these future programs.
Working collaboratively with medical school partners, Sutter Health Academic Affairs leadership, clinical and research leaders, GME faculty, operational partners, mentors, and educational coordinators, the Lead will design, coordinate, grow, and continuously improve these programs. The role will establish clear authority, accountability, and standardized processes for program design, learner selection and support, mentor engagement, project oversight, and scholarly dissemination.
The position advances physician workforce development by expanding medical student research opportunities, supporting residency graduates pursuing advanced fellowship training, and building Sutter Health’s academic and research partnerships. High school and general undergraduate summer programs are outside the initial scope of this role.
